MAKEUP EXPIRATION DATES
Mascara – 3 months You may be able to get color after three months, but the amount of bacteria that has built up over this amount of time inside the tube from the heat, moisture and re-dipping it onto your lashes is no longer safe. Remember, your eyes have mucous membranes and they can pick up bacteria in an instant! You also will be getting clumpier applications at this point.
Foundation – Liquid - 6 months The integrity of the color and formula doesn’t last long after this. It also harbors bacteria after this point. Not to mention, it’s good to re-check your shade for winter and then summer. Your foundation will last longer if it’s not used on a regular basis, but keep it no longer than a year.
Powder – 2 years (face powder, blushes) Scrape off the top layer of your pressed powder to clean every once in awhile and NEVER store anything on top of the powder! Sponges or puffs left on top of any powder can turn your powder waxy ruining the composition.
Lipstick – 1-2 years Your mouth picks up a lot of bacteria off old lipsticks, but before it gets to your tongue, you’ll realize it feels like a crayon! Lipsticks lose moisture before the color.
Lip Gloss – 6 months-1 year Toss out lip glosses older than one year. Your mouth is a hot host of bad germs that cling to gloss spongetip applicators!
Shadows – 2 years or more If you scrape off the top layer to clean your shadows every once in awhile, they will last a surprisingly long time. What will be harmful to shadows is re-dipping sponge applicators. They can absorb oil and moisture from your eyelids and transfer that onto your shadow making it waxier and changing the composition. It’s best to use brushes that are cleaned on a regular basis as well as keeping your shadows fresh.
Liners – Indefinitely! Liners will dry up and break apart inside the wood before they are harmful to you. Keep liners sharpened with a clean sharpener and you’ll get the most life out of your liners.
