Self Tanning Tips by Noa Alonigreen

As the weather gets warmer and the sleeves and hemlines get shorter, adding a touch of color to pale winter skin with self-tanner helps make the transition seamlessly.

Here are some tips for a successful self-tanned debut:
1. When choosing a color of self-tanner, opt for a tinted one so you can see where the application is going on, but also be realistic about your own skin color. Don’t think a “Dark” shade will get your milky gams looking sun-kissed that much faster. In fact, it could backfire. Pale white skin will look orangey with a self tanner marked for medium or dark shades. Darker skin needs a lot more warmth than pale skin so as not to make it look ashy. Light skin needs a gentle tint of tan, not orange.

2. Give yourself plenty of time for application! Allow for proper exfoliation in the shower with a loofah, washcloth, or shower gel with exfoliating beads in it. Pay special attention to areas of the body with thicker skin like elbows, wrists, knees, and ankles. Thick skin absorbs pigment much more. After the shower, dry off thoroughly and wait 5 minutes before applying. After applying on each major body area, wash your hands, and wait 5-10 more minutes or more before getting dressed.

3. If you are unsure about your first application, use a body moisturizer first all over then wait ten minutes to apply the self-tanner.

4. Use a circular motion to apply to one body part at a time. Take your time making sure it is completely absorbed, and that you haven’t missed any spots. Apply very lightly over elbows, knees, around the ankles, wrists and the tops of hands. Be careful to take a towel and wipe off excess self-tanner in between your fingers. To get the back of your hands without discoloring your palms, put a little self-tanner on a cotton ball and apply that way.

5. If you do find the next day that there are empty spaces, streaks, or any other “oops” areas, don’t worry. The next day just repeat the exfoliation, save time for drying, and reapply.

6. To maintain your color reapply self-tanner once every 5-7 days.
Practice makes perfect! You’ll get the hang of it in time for your vacation or your short shorts.
